Oak Apple Ayumu
Black with minimal white and moonspots
Ayumu (Mu-Mu, as we call him) is a handsome guy. Not only is he a grandson of the great Cernunnos, he is a bottle baby and is just the sweetest thing ever. He really has the personality of a dog. I love him to pieces. Mu-Mu contracted secondary pneumonia the summer after arriving at our farm, after our herd was exposed to Bovine Syncytial Respiratory Virus (indigenous to cattle, and we live near a cattle ranch) and nearly died, as it took awhile to identify the root cause (the pneumonia became very hard to eradicate until multiple antibiotics were used that also worked on gram positive bacteria). Thanks to good veterinary care and my willingness to be really diligent in treatment, he survived. We're so thankful to have him around still! He is now growing again, and while I fear there is lasting damage to his lungs, he gets good care living an easy life, and is as happy as he can be. He will never be sold due to his requirement to have a herdkeeper who knows his needs, and because he is really my baby now. Mu-Mu's genetics will be put to good use in our herd.
I have seen his dam's udder in person, and the picture really does her no justice. We purchased him for his potential ability to add very good attachments as well as strong shoulders. Dam Mizuki scored an E in udder at 9 years old (!) and a V in shoulders and back at the same age. That's amazing, and it speaks to our desire to have a goat who can be functional for a long period of time without wearing out her body.
Strengths: length, brisket, legs, back, rear leg angulation, leg placement, shoulders...this guy has it all. The moonspots are a bonus!
Weaknesses: I'd love to see a bit more width at this point, but he seems to be slowly growing into that, and his slowness to fill out could definitely be a result of his illness as a youngster. I'd also love to see a flatter rump from thurl to thurl, but that's my wish item for most Nigerians. According to one appraiser, it is one of the breed's most widespread faults and something we diligently need to be correcting.
